What's Blooming: May

Check out what's blooming at Sloat locations this month....

PIERCE STREET (Marina) location: We have a wonderful color-drenched selection of Argyranthemums; the fragrance of our newly-arrived 5-gal rose section is divine (especially Dream Come True's intense magenta bloom), the flower heads of one gorgeous Viburnum opulus are hanging like big fat snowballs-in-spring from the deciduous shrub; a fresh crop of Equisetum scirpoides (dwarf horsetail) is just what you need for a shady moist corner of your garden.

DANVILLE location: Bougainvilleas in purple, gold and fuchsia, gorgeous red leaf banana trees, a great selection of blooming roses and 30 different kinds of delicious tomatoes.

KENTFIELD location: Our selection of color annuals is pretty impressive. We have petunias, zinnias, snapdragon and other sun lovers. Our selection of million bells (calibrachoa) come in millions of different colors and they are amazing pot fillers and trailers. We have a great selection of groundcovers, including natives such as manzanitas, ceanothus and erigeron. All of these are available in 4inch and jumbo packs. And...an explosion of veggies & herbs. Grow your own!

3rd Avenue (SF) location: We have a huge selection of specialty annuals and perennials from Annie's Annuals! 4" Sweet Peas with wonderful, sweet smelling flowers. Also tons of Zinnias, fresh tomato plants and don't forget the roses (The rose variety "Just Joey' is gorgeous right now). Assistant Manager Mike DiTota's favorite perennial is in stock -- it's Collinsia heterophylla "Chinese Houses". This super attractive native blooms spring through early summer with showy orchid snapdragon-like flowers. Mike first discovered them in a field while visiting Yosemite!

At all Sloat locations:
Lithodora: This stunning plant needs sun to bloom but appreciates some shade in the afternoon in hot summer areas. It requires good drainage but unlike most rock garden plants, Lithodora wants a soil rich in compost as opposed to grit.  Mulching with microbark helps keep its roots cool. Read more about Lithodora on our Blog. Click here.

Snow Ball Viburnum (Viburnum opulis Sterile):  It is hard to resist those big white puffs.  This Viburnum will thrive in full to part sun.  It grows quickly, once established, up to 15’ tall. Though they lose their leaves, the fall color on their maple-shaped leaves can be dramatic.

Clematis Hybrids: These vines want sun but the roots want to be cool and shaded. Many of the hybrids will bloom in the spring and again in mid to late summer.

Jasminum polyanthemum: A perennial favorite!  It has fragrance, grows in full or part sun, is deer resistant, and grows fast. Since it only blooms in the spring, combining it with Solanum jasminoides which has all the same characteristics except scent and it blooms in the summer and fall.  They are equally aggressive so one won’t take over the other.

Iris: Both Pacific Coast Hybrids and Bearded Iris. Pacific Coast Hybrids are ideal for woodsy settings. Both are deer resistant.
