Piper auritum (Hoja Santa)

posted by

Piper auritum (also known as root beer plant) is a very special herb with endless uses. Native to Mexico and South America, its closest relative is the plant that produces black peppercorns.

Its leaves have a diverse flavor profile with hints of licorice, nutmeg, tarragon, black pepper and mint. Traditional Mexican uses include green moles, wraps for tamales and fish, and flavoring soups and rice. Modern cuisine has seen it used in cocktails and appetizers.

Piper auritum plants are very pretty in the garden, with large, heart-shaped tropical looking leaves. Flowers have interesting long cylindrical spikes that grow upright  from the foliage. Grows well in large pots, or in the ground in a protected spot. Give it sun in cooler areas and part shade (especially afternoon shade) in hotter areas. It can be grown in most Bay Area locations with a little frost protection during our coldest nights.
